Master/Expert Class ChampionThings started smoothly for 2 time defending M/X Champion Julian Proleiko, picking up two solid wins in the first two rounds of the Class Championships. Round 3 he was faced off with Iowa Master James Neal, and reached an ending with excellent chances. However, disaster struck, and Neal was able to snatch victory from a tough position, handing our defending champion his first loss in the Class Championships in 3 years! After a great showing, Neal would leave with a 1/2pt bye and some cash before the last round, leaving several players still fighting over the M/X State Champion Plaque. Returning to form, National Master JulianProleiko managed to dispatch Expert Ben Boaz, then former Missouri Denker representative Venithreddy Thatiparth, to end the weekend on four wins, and clinch his third straight Master/Expert Title! ... Class A ChampionshipClass A was the smallest group at this year’s Class Championships, with 8 strong, determined, chess players trying their luck. The group didn’t disappoint, with hard fought and interesting games throughout the weekend. With no player making it through day one without giving up at least a draw, the standings remained tight until the end. Four players, (fully half the field!), still had a legitimate path to winning the section as they entered the final round. Kansas resident Oliver Ohly went into the final round with the lead, but a loss by Ohly would make it anyone’s tournament. A hard fought draw against the section’s top rated player, Matthew Pratt, gave Ohly the points he needed, and he took 1st place in the section. After a great performance in Class C last year, Oliver moved up 2 sections and still went undefeated, with 3 wins and 2 draws! Nipping on his heels with 3.5pts was locals Michael Pugachev and Mark Chengxi Li, whose tie for 2nd made them the highest finishing Missouri players in the section. Mark ended the day with the stronger tiebreaks, allowing him to take home the Class A State Champion Plaque! ... See MoreSee Less
